Message from WOGA – Fire Update

May 4, 2017

Message from WOGA

As we celebrate our 135th Anniversary, we have been met with both happy and traumatic news. Classes at Westwood were suspended indefinitely yesterday following a fire on Tuesday night. The fire, which was confined to the kitchen and main dining room areas, destroyed the roof, furniture and heavy-duty appliances.

We are relieved that none of the girls were hurt and we laud the efforts of the firefighters and plant supervisor in quickly containing the fire. Hats off to the staff, students and Principal for their prompt response. We are advised that the evacuation conformed to all fire drill exercises.

The Investigation to ascertain the details of what triggered the fire and an estimate of the damage are still underway.

Boarders from the upper school who were slated to sit external examinations starting on Monday, have been asked to return on Sunday.  The Board will meet on Friday, May 5 and from that short-term plans will be put in place for all other students and the remainder of the academic year.

In an effort to assist with rebuilding the structure WOGA and the school are asking for donations.
