Alpha Phi Alpha Donates US $50,000 to Rebuild Jamaican Schools Devastated by Hurricane Melissa

In a ceremony at New York’s Jamaican Consulate, the historic fraternity channeled its century-old mission into urgent post-storm relief for Monroe College, St. Hilda’s, and Westwood High School.

The Consulate General of Jamaica in New York was the setting for a quietly historic moment on Thursday, 26th February 2026, as representatives of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. presented a symbolic check for US $50,000 to the Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations (UJAA), for funds earmarked to help three Jamaican high schools rebuild in the wake of the catastrophic Hurricane Melissa. The beneficiaries: Monroe College, St. Hilda’s Diocesan High School, and Westwood High School for Girls, each of which suffered extensive structural damage when the storm tore through western Jamaica last year.

The handover, organized in collaboration with UJAA and facilitated by the Consulate, drew together alumni representatives of St. Hilda’s and Westwood schools, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity leadership, and the principals of the three beneficiary schools, who joined virtually from Jamaica  who expressed their appreciation and described the extent of the damage their schools still face.

This is such a selfless act of generosity from the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. I was so honored to represent WOGA NY and accept this award for Westwood on behalf of Principal Francis and the Westwood family. Thanks for being by my side Donnett Campbell and thanks to our St. Hilda’s Sister Debbie Mercer-Miller for her kindness.
